Tom Harty, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President


Tom Harty is Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Meredith Corporation, the leading media and marketing company reaching nearly 95 percent of all U.S. women and owner of local broadcast television stations reaching 30 million Americans.

Harty has played a key leadership role in developing and executing Meredith’s strategic initiatives since joining the Company in 2004. These include growing Meredith’s connection to American consumers across media platforms, meaningfully strengthening its digital capabilities, and enhancing its relationships with advertising and marketing partners.

As President and Chief Executive Officer, a position Harty assumed in 2018, Harty oversaw the integration of brands and properties acquired from Time Inc. Prior to that, Harty served as President of Meredith’s National Media Group, where he led the acquisitions of and subsequent launch of Allrecipes magazine, as well as the additions of the Martha Stewart Living, Rachael Ray Every Day, FamilyFun, Parenting, and EatingWell brands to the Meredith portfolio.

Before joining Meredith, Harty served as Senior Vice President, General Manager for The Golf Digest Companies, a division of Advance Magazines. His broad media company experience includes executive positions with T.V. Guide, where he served as Vice President and Publisher, and Reader’s Digest, where he was Advertising Director. In addition, Harty has held key business positions with The New York Times Company, Forbes, and Gruner + Jahr USA.

Harty currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Association of Magazine Media. He also serves as a board member of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, the economic and community development organization for Des Moines, Iowa, where Meredith has been based for nearly 120 years. Harty holds an MBA from Iona College and a B.S. in Business Administration from Castleton University.

D. Mell Meredith Frazier, Vice Chairman


Mell Meredith Frazier has been a member of the Meredith Corporation Board of Directors since 2000 and was elected Vice Chairman in 2010. She is Chairman of the Board, Meredith Corporation Foundation. Meredith began her career at Meredith Corporation in 1976 and held various positions throughout the company, including editorial, financial, marketing and production positions in publishing; acquisition and financial analysis in broadcasting; and various corporate staff positions through 2003. Most recently, Meredith was Director of Corporate Planning. She was named Vice President of the Meredith Corporation Foundation in 1999, and she assumed her current position as Chairman in 2003.

In addition, Meredith serves as President of the E.T. Meredith Foundation and is a board member of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Meredith is an Advisory Council member with Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines and is an honorary trustee of the Science Center of Iowa, Des Moines Art Center and Dowling Catholic High School Foundation Board.

Elizabeth E. Tallett, Lead Independent Director


Elizabeth E. Tallett, Lead Independent Director, joined the Meredith Corporation Board of Directors in August 2008. From 2002 to 2014, Tallett was Principal of Hunter Partners, LLC, a management company for early to mid-stage pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies. She continues to operate as a consultant to early stage pharmaceutical and healthcare companies.

Tallett has more than 35 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical and consumer industries. Her prior senior management experience includes serving as President and CEO of Transcell Technologies Inc.; President of Centocor Pharmaceuticals; member of the Parke-Davis Executive Committee; and Director of Worldwide Strategic Planning for Warner-Lambert Company.

Tallett was born and educated in England. She graduated from Nottingham University with two First Class Honors degrees in Mathematics and Economics.

Tallett also serves on the Board of Directors of the Principal Financial Group; Qiagen, N.V., the leading global provider of sample and assay technologies; and Anthem Inc., a health benefits company. Previously, she served on the Boards of Coventry Health Care, Inc.; Varian, Inc.; IntegraMed America, Inc.; Varian SemiConductor Equipment Associates Inc.; and Immunicon, Inc. She was a founding Board member of the Biotechnology Council of New Jersey, and is a Trustee of Solebury School in Pennsylvania.

Donald A. Baer


Don Baer joined Brunswick Group in 2021, based in Washington, D.C., building on a career that has spanned leadership roles in business, media, government, politics and the non-profit sector. He has deep experience creating long-term value for and helping manage the reputations of major enterprises across the world. Baer works with Brunswick’s clients on their most critical issues, drawing on his background as a communications and policy strategist for leading clients, especially technology, communications, media, consulting and financial services businesses.

From 2012-18, Baer was Worldwide Chair and CEO of strategic communications firm Burson-Marsteller, and, after its merger to form BCW, Global Chair from 2018-19. He joined the firm in 2007 as Worldwide Vice Chair. Since 2014, Baer has been Chair of the Board of Directors of PBS and a member of the Board of Directors of publicly traded media company Meredith Corporation.

From 1994 – 98, Baer served President Bill Clinton, as Assistant to the President and White House Director of Communications and Strategic Planning, and, before that, as Chief Speechwriter/Director of Speechwriting and Research. He played a senior role across the Administration, including in President Clinton’s historic 1996 reelection campaign.

From 1998 to 2007, Baer worked at global media company Discovery Communications as Senior Executive Vice President for Strategy and Development and a principal deputy to the CEO. He led corporate communications and marketing, research, public policy and corporate responsibility, along with new ventures and acquisitions and the launch of key Discovery businesses including digital media, education, mobile services and public affairs productions. He played a key role in the Discovery/New York Times Company joint venture in the Discovery Times Channel. His productions included the 2004 Emmy Award-winning series Decisions That Shook the World and the feature-length documentary With All Deliberate Speed about the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown vs. Board of Education decision. Baer helped found the Silverdocs documentary festival with the American Film Institute (now AFIDocs).

Before the White House, Baer was a journalist at U.S. News & World Report, as an assistant managing editor, national political reporter and White House correspondent, and at The American Lawyer. Baerstarted his career as a media lawyer in New York City at Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler.

Baer is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He serves on the Planet Word Board of Directors, NewsGuard’s Advisory Board and OZY Media’s Board of Advisors. In 2020, he was a Walter Shorenstein Media and Democracy Fellow and a Hauser Leader at Harvard's Kennedy School. For 15 years, he was a writer for the annual Kennedy Center Honors TV production, winning two Writers Guild of America awards.

Baer received a B.A. from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Phi Beta Kappa), a Master’s in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (Rotary Fellowship) and a J.D. from The University of Virginia School of Law.

Donald C. Berg


Don Berg is President of DCB Advisory Services, which provides consulting services to food and beverage companies ranging from start-up companies to multinational conglomerates.

Berg spent 26 years with Brown-Forman Corporation, a family-controlled NYSE listed global producer and marketer of fine quality beverage alcohol brands and one of the largest companies in the global wine and spirits industry, retiring as Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer in April 2014. During his career with Brown-Forman Berg held various domestic and international executive positions, including President of Brown-Forman Spirits Americas, the Company’s largest operating group; head of its corporate development and strategy functions; director of its mergers and acquisitions group; and was President of Advancing Markets which held responsibility for leading Brown-Forman in to the emerging markets (which led the Company’s globalization taking international sales from representing 15% of sales (1994) to over 60% of sales (2008).

Prior to joining Brown-Forman, Berg held various finance, sales and marketing roles with respected national and international consumer goods and pharmaceutical firms. He began his career as a Certified Public Accountant with Ernst & Whinney.

Currently, Berg is the non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Gildan Activewear Inc, a publicly-held dual listed Canadian global branded apparel company, after previously serving as Chair of the Compensation Human Resource Committee, and as a member of the Audit/Finance and the Governance/Social Responsibility Committees. Berg has been a director of Gildan since 2015. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Meredith Corporation (since 2012), a publicly-held media and marketing company, where he is Chair of the Audit Committee. Berg also recently joined the Board of Beam Suntory International (April 2019), one of the largest and privately-owned global spirits companies owned by Suntory Holdings in Tokyo Japan.

He also serves as Chairman of the Board of the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville, and as a Trustee of Bellarmine University. He is a past Trustee of Augustana College.

Mr. Berg holds a Master of Business Administration degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1983) and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Augustana College, IL (1977).

Greg Coleman


Greg Coleman is an Entrepreneur in Residence at Lerer Hippeau Ventures and sits on numerous boards at the intersection of technology, media and advertising including BuzzFeed Japan, LoopMe, Skimlinks, and Botify.

Most recently, Greg was the President of BuzzFeed and advertising technology company Criteo. He has previously held roles as President and Chief Revenue Officer at the Huffington Post and the EVP of Global Sales at Yahoo. Greg also served as President of Platform-A at AOL from February to April of 2009 and was formerly Senior Vice President of Reader’s Digest Association and president of U.S. Magazine Publishing. At CBS, Inc., he spent 10 years leading advertising efforts for Woman’s Day as Vice President and National Sales Manager.

Coleman holds a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Georgetown University and attended the M.B.A. program at New York University. He currently lives in Greenwich Village with his wife and children and is an adjunct professor at New York University's Stern School of Business where he teaches a class on digital marketing and innovation.

Beth J. Kaplan


Beth Kaplan is currently the Managing Member of Axcel Partners, LLC investing in consumer facing early stage and growth companies. Prior to this, Kaplan was President and Chief Operating Officer at Rent the Runway, a fashion apparel company with a technology soul disrupting the way women get dressed. In her role, Kaplan worked closely with the co-founders and oversaw finance, operations, merchandising, customer insights, business development, and retail.

Prior to joining Rent the Runway, Kaplan served as President and Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer, and Director at General Nutrition Centers Inc. where her focus was on key strategic initiatives surrounding the marketing & merchandising of GNC stores, development of an ecommerce platform, and product development. Kaplan played an integral role in the company’s 2011 IPO, the most successful IPO that year. Prior to GNC, Kaplan served as Executive Vice President and General Manager at Bath & Body Works where she oversaw the merchandising and marketing of the new flagship store format. Prior to Bath & Body Works, Kaplan was the Executive Vice President of Marketing and Merchandising at Rite Aid Drugstores, and prior to that spent 16 years at Procter & Gamble, her last role being President and General Manager of the Cosmetics and Fragrance division, including Cover Girl and Max Factor.

Kaplan received a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been recognized in the industry for her work on a number of occasions including Drugstore Marketer of the Year in 1998 and one of Advertising Age’s Top 10 “Women to Watch” in 1999. She was the keynote speaker this year at Baltimore’s Women to Watch event. In addition to Rent The Runway and Meredith, Kaplan is also a director of the Howard Hughes Corporation, a director of Framebridge, a director of Leesa Sleep, and a director of Car/of. She was previously a director at Blackboard (public), Sleepys (private equity), Things Remembered (private equity), Minute Clinic (venture), and The First Years (public).

Kaplan splits her time between New York City and Baltimore, Maryland, and is married with two sons.

Paula A. Kerger


Paula A. Kerger is President and Chief Executive Officer of PBS, the nation’s largest non-commercial media organization with nearly 350 member stations throughout the country. Having joined PBS in March 2006, Kerger is the longest-serving president and CEO in PBS history. Kerger also serves as president of the PBS Foundation, an independent organization that raises private sector funding — a significant source of revenue for new projects at PBS.

Kerger is regularly included in the Hollywood Reporter’s “Women in Entertainment Power 100,” an annual survey of the nation’s top women executives in media, as well as Washingtonian Magazine’s Most Powerful Women in Washington. She has been honored with the Woman of Achievement Award from Women in Development, New York, the National Education Association Friend of Education Award, and Promax/BDA, B&C and Multichannel News Brand Builder Award. In 2017 she received the Advancing American Democracy Award from the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Prior to joining PBS, Kerger served for more than a decade at Educational Broadcasting Corporation where her ultimate position was executive vice president and chief operating officer. Her tenure boasts many achievements, including WNET’s completion in 1997 of the largest successful endowment campaign ever undertaken by a public television station.

Kerger received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Baltimore, where she serves on the Merrick School of Business Dean’s Advisory Council. She has received honorary doctorates from Washington University in St. Louis, Grand Valley State University, Allegheny College and Northeastern University. She is a member of the Women’s Forum, director of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and chair of the board of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History.

Christopher Roberts III


Chris Roberts is executive vice president and general manager of Global Food & Beverage (F&B) for Ecolab Inc., the global leader in water, hygiene and infection preventions solutions and services that protect people and vital resources.

In his current role, Roberts leads the Global Food & Beverage business, which provides cleaning, sanitizing and other solutions to food and beverage processors throughout the world.

Roberts joined Ecolab in 2020 after 25 years of holding multiple leadership positions in FritoLay/PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Cargill. Prior to joining Ecolab, Roberts was an executive at Land O’Lakes, where he joined as president of the Dairy division and most recently served as its chief customer officer.

He is a member of the Executive Leadership Council and National Black MBA Association and holds leadership roles in the Women’s Foodservice Forum and Young Life. He also is a board member of the Meredith Corporation, a media conglomerate based in Des Moines, Iowa.

Roberts holds a master’s degree in management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Illinois-Urbana.

The Board's Nominating/Governance Committee works with management and, at times, a national search firm to nominate candidates to fill Board vacancies. Directors are elected at the annual shareholders meeting. Board members serve 3-year terms; the number of terms is unlimited, though Board members may not serve past the Annual Meeting following their 72nd birthday.

Board Responsibilities

While corporate officers and executives manage Meredith's day-to-day operations and activities, the Board provides oversight, advice and counsel on issues as wide-ranging as long-term strategy, budgets, human resources, benefits, marketing and new product development. Specifically, the Board:

  • Makes certain there is a management succession plan in place.
  • Reviews and approves strategic plans and budgets.
  • Approves major matters and expenditures (acquisitions, divestitures, financings, level of debt, etc.)
  • Discusses and approves recommendations from the four Board Committees (finance, compensation, nominating/governance and audit)
  • Monitors company policies to ensure they comply with financial accounting standards, legal and ethical standards, laws, regulations, etc.
  • Provides general advice and counsel to management.
  • Ultimately, the Board has a legal responsibility to act in the best interest of the shareholders. In practical terms, that boils down to making sure the company is run soundly, ethically and profitably.
